Story of Adam and Eve

The Synaxarium reading for Adam and Eve

Who can describe the blessed life that our father Adam and our mother Eve enjoyed when God placed them in the Garden of Eden? The Lord God created them in His image and gave them a beautiful dwelling, filled with every tree that was pleasant to the sight and good for food. They lived together in purity and innocence before God, knowing neither shame nor fear.

God gave Adam a commandment, saying that he might freely eat from the trees of the garden, but he must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Yet the serpent, who was more subtle than the beasts of the field, came to Eve and deceived her. He caused her to doubt the word of God and said to her, “Ye shall not surely die.” He told her that if she ate of the tree, her eyes would be opened and she would know good and evil.
